On October 20th, a record-breaking crowd of 18,000 fans filled the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, all rooting for the success of the WNBA team the New York Liberty, as they took on the Minnesota Lynx. After years of waiting and much suspense, the New York Liberty did not take this year's playoffs easily, securing their first ever championship win by a close five points. From the very beginning of the season, the New York Liberty had a championship in mind, and knew that they had more talent and were stronger than any team before.

The New York Liberty entered the season with an abundant amount of talent and more hope and confidence than ever before. The team was composed of highlight stars Sabrina Ionescu, Brenna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones, who had improved from years prior, as well as newly drafted players such as Leonie Fiebich and Kennedy Burke. After pushing hard throughout the season, and an impressive regular season record of 32-8, fans had high hopes for the team's success in the championship.

As one of the eight original franchises of WNBA formed in 1997, The New York Liberty WNBA team entered the 2024 season as the only team yet to win a championship title, despite making the finals five times. In addition, no New York area basketball team has won a major championship title since 1976, adding even more pressure for the team to perform to the best of their abilities and yet another reason for fans to be intensely excited.

The New York Liberty's successful performance in the playoffs, consisting of a captivating three rounds, would be the mark of a new era, and a breakthrough that fans and players alike felt was overdue. The first round is a best-of-three games set, and the second two games (semifinals and finals) are best-of-five. The New York Liberty held their ground throughout the playoffs as they went 2-0 in round one against the Atlanta Dreams and then 3-1 in the semifinals against the Las Vegas Aces.

In the finals, the New York Liberty entered game five tied with the Lynx 2-2. In the first quarter of the game the Lynx were ahead with a nine point lead, and by the end of quarter two, the New York Liberty was still down seven points. The Liberty entered quarter four of the game strong, as in the third quarter they scored twenty points, double the amount that Lynx did, putting them up 47-44. After a back-and-forth, Breanna Stewart scored two free throws with just 5 seconds left, tying the score 60-60. This led the game to go into an intense overtime, in which the New York Liberty performed to the crowd's expectations and scored seven points, while the Lynx scored only two. These five minutes were the most important of the game, and equally as thrilling, as the New York Liberty ended their victory with a close score of 67-62.

After such a successful season for the New York Liberty, fans and WNBA followers alike foresee a bright future for the team. After their championship victory that has cemented their place in the WNBA and made New York basketball history the team is extremely well positioned to continue their success in future years.
